  • Vista Migration

  • Overview

This paper is only applicable to organizations with more than 200 nodes.

The latest Windows operating system (OS), Vista, has been touted as having the most advanced capabilities of any Microsoft OS1. That may be so, but previous experience, as typified for example with the roll out of Windows XP, has shown that accessing these capabilities may come at a price.

Vista has already been recognised as having very demanding system requirements2 and this, added to the usual complexities of carrying out any major software upgrade, has the potential to create considerable business disruptions when the new OS is rolled out across any significant number of workstations.
This paper considers how automated OS deployment and migration systems might be able to assist in the smooth and trouble-free deployment of Vista, concluding that it could add significant value in freeing up IT staff from the mundane process of carrying out upgrades so they can be dedicated to troubleshooting and training tasks.
