Overview
Enterprises are becoming more chaotic in terms of information storage and management. Indeed, all organisations, whether they are businesses, government or not-for-profits, have multiple different repositories for content, and their employees are frequently using unmanaged e-mail in-boxes and local hard drives as additional places to store important information. Consequently, a large amount of time is spent looking for information, and this could very easily be adding up to over 10% of an organisation's employee costs. Not only is this is a major inefficiency and drain on expensive corporate resources, but it also points to a potentially significant area of corporate risk. The information required to complete a business task or aid decision making is dispersed across the Intranet, Internet, and a variety of corporate applications, and so it is no longer possible, if ever it was, for information workers to aggregate and synthesise everything that is relevant to the task at hand. Getting the right information to the right person at the right time is clearly a fundamental business requirement for the agile and flexible organisation, as not only does it enable a company to exploit its corporate information assets, but it also enables it to meet compliance requirements as well.
